[FUNDED] 2026-2027 Orthopaedic (Shoulder/Elbow & Sports Medicine) Research Fellowship under Michel A. Arcand, MD

Location : Providence, Rhode Island

The Department of Orthopaedics at Brown University and University Orthopedics Inc. (UOI) invites applications for a full-time, one-year Clinical Research Fellowship under the mentorship of Michel A. Arcand, MD. The fellowship is designed for 3rd or 4th year highly motivated medical students planning to apply for orthopaedic surgery residency and seeking mentorship. A concentrated experience in clinical research study coordination, data management, and scholarly production. This is a funded, immersive position that provides direct exposure to shoulder/elbow surgery, and sports medicine research as well as an opportunity to study the candidate's fields of interest. As a research fellow, you will work closely with Dr. Arcand, residents, and multidisciplinary collaborators across specialties at UOI and Brown Orthopaedics.

Location: University Orthopedics Inc. and affiliated clinical sites in Providence, RI

Core Responsibilities

Fellows participate in the full life cycle of clinical research, including:

Study Design and Regulatory Activities
• Assist in developing research questions, study protocols, and methodological plans
• Prepare and submit IRB applications, amendments, and continuing reviews
• Maintain regulatory documents in compliance with institutional and federal standards

Patient-Facing Responsibilities
• Recruit, screen, and consent patients for IRB-approved studies
• Coordinate prospective data collection and follow-up
• Participate in clinic-based study workflows and collaborate with clinical staff

Data and Project Management
• Collect, manage, and analyze clinical datasets (e.g. PearlDiver, SPSS/R)
• Maintain structured clinical databases
• Track project milestones from study initiation through manuscript submission

Manuscript and Abstract Preparation
• Perform focused literature reviews
• Draft and revise abstracts, posters, manuscripts, and conference presentations
• Support presentations for local, regional, and national meetings

Team Engagement and Clinical Exposure
• Attend weekly research meetings, Orthopaedic Grand Rounds, and specialty conferences
• Collaborate with medical students, residents, fellows, and research personnel
• Opportunities for clinic observation as scheduling permits
• Travel to local affiliated clinical sites may be required

Preferred Qualifications
• Third or fourth-year medical student
• US applicants only (No visa sponsorship available)
• Prior research experience and statistical analysis background are preferred but not required
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects
• Clear written and verbal communication skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and cloud-based data platforms such as REDCap or Google Suite
• Ability to learn clinical terminology and workflows
• Capacity to work independently and within a fast-paced, collaborative research environment
• Professionalism, reliability, and discretion when handling protected health information
